Where are you based?
I am based in Seattle, Washington.
Where's your favourite place to ride?
Any day that I get to explore new roads and new routes is a good one. If there is good weather, a nice climb, beautiful scenery, courteous drivers and a spot to grab a coffee along the way: even better. Around where I live, we are lucky to have a coupe of longer climbs in the Cascade mountains that do not have a lot of cars, but have lots of scenery, elevation and many forest roads to explore.
What type of riding do you like to do the most?
Most of my riding currently involves a road bike. I enjoy the long climbs and the fast descents and sometimes taking it where it does not belong. I am getting my first cyclocross bike soon that I plan to use to explore many more backcountry and forest roads. However as nice as it is to ride on gravel and dirt, there is nothing I enjoy more than seeing tarmac under my tires.
How do you discover a new route? Do you plan ahead with maps or just see where the road takes you?
I have been a map nerd since I was a little kid, so I use any opportunity I have to unfold the maps on the floor and figure out where to go and explore. On the modern side of things, Strava is a great resource to find places to ride when I travel to new locations. But nothing beats reaching out to other folks for local knowledge and information. Then there are other times, when I have a plan and a direction in mind but find a new road along the way and see where it leads me.
What equipment do you use to capture your ride?
Often times it's my phone. At other times I bring a film point-and-shoot. And sometimes I bring my DSLR. Whatever feels good that day.
What destination would be on your riding wish list?
SO MANY! I love cycling's obsession with its own history, so all of the legendary European climbs and roads are on my list. I would love to check out the Stelvios and Ventouxs... But there are so many other amazing roads and places to ride. Japan, Scotland, Iceland, New Zealand are just a few that come to mind. It may seem like a cop-out answer, but I want to ride any cool road that I have not ridden yet.
