CONSTANTIN GERLACH

Where are you based?
Right now I‘m based in Berlin, Germany.

Where‘s your favourite place to ride?
I really like the outskirts of Berlin. As soon as you leave the city boundary behind, you can find a lot of nice, often quiet, roads through beautiful pine forests, beside lakes to jump into in the summer times. Since I only ride fixed grear bikes at the moment, the area around Berin is perfect for this type of bike because it's pretty flat out there and you can easely ride with only one gear.

I also loved cycling the coast around Barcelona in summer. A local friend, Stefano (from Raw Cycling Magazine), showed us a nice, straight 100km route from Barcelona to St. Pol de Mar and back following the shoreline. Perfect conditions for going fast and dirty on a track bike. I also loved to go on nightrides in the city of Barcelona, in my opinion an awesome place for cycling. And yes, I loved riding through France. Nice roads, little traffic, beautiful landscape, awesome food and the nicest car drivers I ever experienced.

What type of riding do you like to do the most?
Hard to tell. I really like to go fast and hard over short distances like 60km to really get exhausted. To be honest, I get bored pretty fast on longer distances around Berlin. If I go on longer trips I love to have a target to aim to like I did in my photographic project „1103 - BON COURAGE“. I travalled 1103km in 12 days with 8500m of climbing, unsupported on a track bike along the frensh coast from Brest to Dieppe. This was my first time travelling by bike and I will definitely do it again! But maybe next time with a bike that has more then one gear, hehe.

How do you discover a new route? Do you plan ahead with maps or just see where the road takes you?
In France I didn‘t use any GPS, just a map where I marked the closest route to the shoreline I wanted to ride with a magic marker. From time to time I just asked some locals where I should go and whats the nicest roads to ride on. I really liked riding like this, not thinking too much, just riding and see where it takes you.

What equipment do you use to capture your ride?
While riding around Berlin I normaly only use my phones camera. On bigger journies like in France or our trip from Berlin to the Baltic Sea, I take my Canon 5D Mark III with me with the Sigma Art 35mm/1.4. Quite heavy and bulky but as a student I can‘t afford a second camera right now. In the future I would like to buy an additional, smaller camera like the Fuji X100S or something like that to carry with me while out riding.

What destination would be on your riding wish list?
I would love to cycle the east and west coast of the states. An other place i would like to discover by bike is Sweden and Norway or the Alps since I never rode my bike in the mountains. Let‘s see where the future takes me.
