EVA SYNNESTVEDT

Where are you based?
I am based in Freiburg, which is in the Black Forest in Germany. I am originally from the flat land of Denmark.

Where's your favourite place to ride?
My favorite place to ride is here, in the black forest. I love the small hidden roads, the rivers, the soft mountaintops and the smell of the forest. But I guess I would fall in love with any mountainous area.

What type of riding do you like to do the most?
I am a road cyclist and I very rarely ride other types of bikes. I however tend to use my roadbike as a mountainbike or cross bike when ever I feel the need to go into the forest. My favorite type of ride is what I call adventure rides, I go out only with the goal of being back in 5 hours or more. I can freely decide how hard or easy I will go and I can try out new roads or trails (not the small single trails I am too scared for that, now…) not worrying about dead ends or being lost.

How do you discover a new route? Do you plan ahead with maps or just see where the road takes you?
Both I would say, I use strava a lot and if I want to go for a long ride I usually plan a head. But also I ride new roads just because they are there, I love the adventure of the unknown; maybe that particular road is taking you to a breathtaking view or a small mountain lake, who knows?

I always have my garmin with me so I can find my way back and is able to see where I went. I think the easiest way and most fun way to find new roads is by riding with new people, in that way you get new friends and your headmap is increased.

What equipment do you use to capture your ride?
I use my Sony Xperia Z1 compact – it is waterproof!

What destination would be on your riding wish list?
That is difficult…. There are so many great places – one thing I know for sure is that I want to ride the roads less travelled. But if I should choose it would be Iceland. Iceland is rough and filled with dramatic sceneries, hot ponds, horses, waterfalls and glaciers. I was there on vacation years ago (before I started riding bikes) and travelled around in a car; it was spectacular but not enough. I believe that every country, mountain or road is travelled best by bike, you feel the road, smell the air and observes the small details, simply because you are moving slower then in a car. I would love to ride across or the whole way around the Island – or maybe both! In Iceland can you really go and find somewhere to loose yourself.
