Where are you based?
Portland, OR now, but relocating to DC area later this year.
Where's your favourite place to ride?
Oregon is an amazing place to ride. I've really become enamored with the high desert east of the cascades. It's such a lovely landscape that's full of nuance and adventure. Part of the appeal is overcoming fears of traveling such a harsh landscape and managing resupply and water sources.
What type of riding do you like to do the most?
Anything that involves some camping, and a high likelihood of becoming lost or across a section that may not be rideable.
How do you discover a new route? Do you plan ahead with maps or just see where the road takes you?
I am often on a ride and I see a road that captures my interest. Sometimes I investigate then and there, other times I’ll research a route on map before returning. A lot of it has to do with how well I know an area. Around here, there are a lot of logging roads that dead end and aren’t on any maps, so it becomes a little tricky to navigate some places.
I like using Google maps and Google earth to source out info about specific areas and likely passages through.
What equipment do you use to capture your ride?
I use a Samsung NX3000 mostly these days. I’ll occasionally take photos with my iPhone. I’m still learning a lot about the manual functions on the Samsung, but its been a lot of fun.
What destination would be on your riding wish list?
Lots of places lately. Mostly remote places like Iceland and the high countries of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. But also I'm longing to take a very relaxed tour with my wife in Cuba or Thailand and surrounding areas, although I'm a bit more motivated by the food and beaches...
