Where are you based?
I just moved to the bay area near SF. I recently moved from Portland, which will always be home to me. I don't really miss the rain, but I miss everything else.
Where's your favourite place to ride?
Riding down the Oregon coast and into the Redwoods is at the top of my list of best rides ever. I've done it twice and I feel like I could keep on doing it and it would never feel old.
What type of riding do you like to do the most?
My body was not designed for climbing but I've learned over the years to appreciate the process. Find a rhythm, lose yourself in the tempo, and then there's always the reward when the road tilts downward. I also love (really love) racing cyclocross.
How do you discover a new route? Do you plan ahead with maps or just see where the road takes you?
So much of cycling is word of mouth so a lot of the roads I discover are shown to me by other riders. Then you get to return the favour. If I'm in a place I've never been I'll use Strava to see what roads local cyclists choose - that is a super handy tool. And if all else fails just head out, pick a road, turn onto it, and see where it goes.
What equipment do you use to capture your ride?
My favorite cameras to take on rides are the Ricoh GR and an old beat up Yashica T4 for shooting film. They have very similar look to their imagery despite being completely different formats. They're both fixed, wide lenses with wide apertures and contrasty qualities. I shoot quite a bit with the iPhone too. But to make all my images live together visually I process everything with VSCO filters on the desktop or my phone before posting.
What destination would be on your riding wish list?
I'm dying to ride around Iceland, up Haleakala on Maui and I'd like to ride across the US for a second time but take a little more time to enjoy it. Last time I averaged 150 miles per day...
