It always amazes me to discover how little information appears to be available on basic facts about the natural world. Namely how many trees are there?

This proved more difficult to find out than I thought. There's plenty of information if we're interested in what's chopped down and sold but little information if we just want to understand our landscape.

What I did discover is that only 13% of the British Isles is woodland. Of this, around 2.5% are ancient trees. Comparing all the information I uncovered about tree coverage, the ancient tree inventory was a good representation of the proportion of different tree species.

So I decided to focus on native tree species as well as sycamore and sweet chestnuts as together, they make up 84% of ancient trees.

The print orders the trees in relation to their numbers. Oak are more populous than any other species with more than 40%. The height of the tree relates to the tallest recorded specimen in the UK and the width is the largest recorded girth. The markings along the trunk indicate the distribution across the UK from Scotland at the canopy to Cornwall at the trunk.
