Where are you based?
Cape Town, South Africa
Where's your favourite place to ride?
The Klein Karoo, which is filled with big skies and almost no civilisation. The quiet nature of the area really talks to me.
Internationally, the best spot I have ridden was at Cent Cols Challenge Dolomites, which was extreme in every way, and the scenery was mind-blowing.
What type of riding do you like to do the most?
My favourite kind is the exploring kind, where new roads are the order of the day. I like to combine multiple days of these together, in an unsupported fashion, where we simply ride without a back-up vehicle and have to make our way between hotel bookings to get from A to B to G to Z.
How do you discover a new route? Do you plan ahead with maps or just see where the road takes you?
Yes, we always plan for the big rides. Google Maps + Tracks4Africa + asking locals for the little nuggets that might not show well on a 2D map. But even then, best laid plans are just that and if something pops up and looks amazing, we’ll hit it. If weather rolls in, we try and work our way around it.
What equipment do you use to capture your ride?
I have just gotten a Canon G7X, but previously went out with a Nikon AW110 and will likely still use the Nikon for when the weather is a little suspect.
What destination would be on your riding wish list?
So many on the list.
Pyrenees, Alps, Rockies, Japan and locally, the Eastern Cape are high on my list. I have mapped out a ride in the Eastern Cape which is fly in, fly out with 9 days of riding in there, which we are hoping to do sometime in the next year.
